XAMPP on Linux

Install XAMPP (Instructions for users comfortable in linux environment)

Two easy steps:

  1. .Download the most recent version of XAMPP: (for version 1.6.6, 2008/2/11)
 Download XAMPP for linux
  1. .Extract the archive to /opt using sudo: (make sure you are in the directory that you downloaded the archive to)
  sudo tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.6.6.tar.gz -C /opt

Start XAMPP

To start it up, open a terminal and type this:

   sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start

Test your installation by typing http://localhost in your browser.

Stop XAMPP

To stop it, open a terminal and type this:

  sudo /opt/lampp/lampp stop

Uninstall XAMPP

To uninstall XAMPP, open a terminal and type this:

  rm -rf /opt/lampp 


NOTES

  • At the workshop please set your Eclipse workspace to point to /opt/lampp/htdocs/workspace.You will be provided with the appropriate project files.
  • XAMPP is not meant for production use but only for developers in a development environment. The way XAMPP is configured by default is to be open as possible and allowing the developer anything he/she wants. For development environments this is great but in a production environment it could be fatal.
    • To fix most of the security weaknesses simply call the following command:
 /opt/lampp/lampp security
