Brief Bio

Updated August 25, 2008

In September 2008, I begin my fourth year as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Trinity College where I teach Computers, Information and Society, Introduction to Computing, Database Fundamentals, and Principles of Software Engineering. Previously, I spent eleven years in the Department of Engineering and Science at Rensselaer at Hartford where I mostly taught graduate software engineering courses to adult working professionals. One of the most fun aspects of my job is that I have learned at least as much from my students as they have learned from me.

My research interests lie in the area of software engineering education, technology in education and scientific software. I have a pending NIH-BDMA grant in conjunction with Michael Gryk from the University of Connecticut Health Center to support the CONNJUR project. CONNJUR is a software integration platform for biomolecular NMR spectroscopy. I also have an NSF-CCLI grant, SoftHum, Student Participation in the Community of Open Source Software for Humanity, to support the course materials and infrastructure that best support the inclusion of undergraduates in Humanitarian Free and Open Source projects. The SoftHum project is supporting the Humanitarian FOSS project that is ongoing at Trinity College, Wesleyan University and Connecticut College.

I have a wonderful husband Howard who provides technical support for the Computer Science and Engineering department at the University of Connecticut. Howard and I have two children. Casey is fourteen and is in ninth grade where she plays flute in the band. She loves lyrical dance and takes riding lessons with mom on Saturdays. Connor is eleven and in sixth grade. He likes Tae Kwan Do and plays fiddle. Scooter is our 6-year-old Boston Terrier who likes to chase the kids' sneakers, while they're on the kids' feet.

I try to make time in my schedule to ride dressage (the horseback equivalent to ballet and what the Lippizaners at the Spanish Riding School do) and I take lessons from Kerrie March at Babcock Hill Equestrian Center. I also enjoy playing flute and painting watercolor.
