Kelly Ward '00 Wins the Travelers Prize

Kelly Ward '00 won the Travelers Prize for her senior research project entitled "The Scientific Visualization Tool." The Travelers Prize is awarded annually by representives of the Travelers Insurance Company to the best senior project in Computer Science.

The visualization tool is an interactive Java program that can be used for learning abstract physics concepts such as friction and gravity. It provides a sophisticated collection of simulation environments, such as a pool table and a brickles game, which the user can play with and modify. For example, the user can modify the friction coefficient that controls the motion of the balls in the pool table simulation. The tool also includes a scientific calculator and a graphing instrument, enabling the user to calculate answers to questions interactively. Prof. Spezialetti was Kelly's project adviser.

The $500 Travelers Prize was awarded on Honors Day.

Receiving honorable mentions this year for there fine projects were: Jamie Mazur '00, for his project "A Content-based Approach to Web Scripting," and Bryan Jackson '00, for his project "A Web-based Home Appliance Controller."

Congratulations to our senior prize winners.
